What happens during a minor ailment assessment
We ask when the problem started, what it feels like and what you have already tried. Then we go through your allergies, health conditions, pregnancy or breastfeeding where it matters, and everything you take — prescription and otherwise. That is what separates a minor ailment from something that needs a doctor.
You leave with one of four things: advice, an over-the-counter product, a prescription, or a referral. Ask us anything before you go — how to take it, how long it should take to work, and what would mean you need to come back.
Can a pharmacist prescribe antibiotics?
In Alberta, yes — for the conditions on the minor ailment list, after an assessment. An antibiotic is not the answer to every infection, so we work out what is likely causing the problem first and whether treating it here is the right call.
If it looks like a more serious infection, something off the list, or something that needs a test we cannot do, we refer you. Nobody gets a prescription just for asking.
Can pharmacists prescribe antibiotics for UTI?
For an uncomplicated urinary tract infection, yes. We ask about your symptoms, your history and the things that make a UTI unsuitable for pharmacist treatment — because not every urinary symptom is a simple UTI.
If we treat it, follow the directions exactly and come back or see a doctor if it is not improving the way we told you to expect. If it is not straightforward, we send you to the right care instead.

When we will send you to a doctor instead
Minor ailment care has limits, and we would rather be straight with you than treat the wrong thing. We refer you when the symptoms point to something more serious, when the picture is unclear, when a test is needed, or when your health history changes what is safe for you.
That also goes for a problem that keeps coming back or has not responded to treatment before. We will tell you where to go — your doctor, a medical clinic, urgent care, or emergency care.

Yes. Pink eye, eye allergies and skin infections such as impetigo are all on our list. Whether you are treated here depends on the assessment.
What should I bring?
